I have been in the biz for a few years in still don't fully understand all the behind the scene figues. "Good Job"

Re: Music Biz MBA: A Physical Distribution Breakeven Analysis

Talk about doing your homework! This is great, David.

I have always personally felt that physical distribution (as an indie artist) is ridiculous. Amazon (while not a traditional physical distributor) is recognized by the Grammys and NARAS as one. And we make less than 50% when we sell a disc there. After paying to ship them to Amazon, we earn (on average) $2-4 per CD sold. Compare that to selling online (through our own sites), where we keep $12 (after shipping).

And I've heard it said, too, that radio will only play you if you've got local distribution. While I've found this may be true in some (very limited) cases, I will say that I self-promoted a (Top 10) charting record in the Americana world with no physical distribution at all. The radio one-sheet literally said "distributor: Amazon". And one of the strongest showings for the album happened to be at WDVX (which you mention above).

So if an indie artist/band is reading this, you may want to think twice about exerting your energy and resources toward landing a distribution deal. These companies will probably be extinct within the next half decade- at which point someone a lot like a radio promoter will "pitch" albums directly to record stores.

Thanks as always for the finely-tuned lesson here, David. Ever above and beyond.

Re: A Fan Found You on Facebook…What’s Next?

Thank you...
Just need to how to beneficiate...
Abakuya

Re: Twitter for Musicians and Artists

Hey Chris,

But this is something we all need to have a better grip on as musicians. Twitter seems one of the most-effective (if even most subtle) of the social networking sites. I'd be very interested in reading the article in its entirety. Thanks.

Re: 5 Fan List Best Practices for Indie Musicians

Another great read, David. Even as an artist who follows most of these points, the concept of cross-promoting is one that many of us (self-included) might not consider. This is why I'm always coming back to this site. Why can't Spotify at least pay the same for streams as these other players and take the upfront loss like any other new business would until they have built up there subscribership. I've since taken a 40% hit in iTunes sales since being on Spotify. What is the upside - more exposure? I get all the free exposure I need on Youtube.

Re: A Fan Found You on Facebook…What’s Next?

Inspiring....motivating....brilliance.
